Abstract
Abstract No country captures the global nature of international population movements better than Italy. Italian emigrants accounted for about 10 percent of all international population movements between 1814 and the outbreak of World War I (Gabaccia 2000). Italian emigration endured two world wars, the Great Depression, and 20 years of fascist dictatorship; it resumed at the end of World War II and remained sustained until the early 1970s. Since the last quarter of the 20th century, Italy has become a major receiver for immigrants from all over the world, and in 2008 it ranked fourth among the European Union member states for number of immigrants, surpassed only by Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom (EUROSTAT 2011).
