En la ultima decada se han publicado diversas guias de practica clinica, en Australia, Canada y EE.UU., para regular el tratamiento psicosocial en personas con cancer. Dichas guias definen la estructura y la direccion de las intervenciones psicosociales en pacientes con cancer y sus familiares. En el presente articulo se realiza una exhaustiva revision de las estrategias de apoyo psicosociales utilizadas, partiendo de la conceptualizacion y taxonomias de apoyo social, asi como las evidencias sobre apoyo social y salud, y apoyo social y cancer. Por ultimo, se describe un modelo gradual de intervencion psicosocial que perfila una estructura clara para la integracion de estos servicios como una parte integrante de los cuidados en oncologia.
