Abstract
Jacques Gréber, architecte-urbaniste français connu pour ses réalisations en Amérique du Nord, a véritablement été l’architecte des villes d’Ottawa et Hull lorsqu’il réalisa, en 1950, le Plan de la capitale nationale. Jusqu’à cette date, Ottawa et Hull, villes industrielles se faisant face sur les rives de la rivière des Outaouais, avaient connu une croissance spontanée et incontrôlée. Soucieuses d’embellir et d’articuler les deux villes pour en faire un seul district fédéral, ses réalisations bénéficiaient à l’époque d’un certain engouement. Il faudra en fait attendre le tournant du XXIe siècle, lorsque ce plan sera réalisé en grande partie et qu’il sera réactualisé partiellement par les instances publiques pour les futurs aménagements de la capitale, pour assister à toute une polémique sur l’héritage de Jacques Gréber. Notre article propose donc, après un survol des réalisations de cet urbaniste, une analyse des critiques adressées à cet héritage urbanistique.
