Pour plusieurs villes nord-américaines et européennes possédant un réseau unitaire, les réservoirs de rétention sont devenus un moyen courant pour diminuer les rejets polluants aux cours d'eau récepteurs et pour régulariser les charges hydrauliques à la station en temps de pluie. Cette étude vise deux objectifs : (1) caractériser les eaux unitaires à l'entrée et en vidange d'un réservoir de rétention par temps de pluie pour deux paramètres principaux : matières en suspension (MES) et demande chimique en oxygène (DCO); et (2) évaluer leurs bilans massiques à l'entrée et à la sortie du réservoir. Une campagne d'échantillonnage à l'entrée et la sortie d'un réservoir utilisant un système de vidange par pompage a été réalisée. Les analyses ont démontré que les particules semblent décanter rapidement, car on les retrouve en grandes quantités lors des premières 20 minutes de vidange. Les bilans de masse démontrent que les réservoirs emmagasinent une importante quantité de matières, permettant d'éviter d'importantes contaminations des cours d'eau lors d'événements pluvieux.
