La participacion de Mexico y Canada en el Tratado de Libre Comercio de America del Norte y su fuerte integracion economica con Estados Unidos de America son las principales referencias para ambos paises, pero deberian serlo tambien las estrategias y grandes diferencias economicas, que los convierten en socios y rivales frente a procesos de despliegue de inversion extranjera. El analisis del desempeno de Mexico y Canada en la economia mundial, requiere precisar los perfiles de comercio exterior de cada pais, para poder avanzar en el establecimiento de puntos de coincidencia y establecer diferencias en las estrategias comerciales de cada pais. Para el analisis de las estrategias de comercio exterior de Mexico y Canada, es importante tambien describir su perspectiva respecto a las negociaciones regionales hemisfericas.
