II y a plusieurs collectivités francophones minoritaires au Canada : locales, provinciales, régionales et nationale. Elles diffèrent quant à leur situation interne, la composition de leur population et le contexte démographique, socio-économique, légal et politique dans lequel elles se trouvent. Face à cette diversification, l'un des défis pour l'analyse sociologique est de conceptualiser et éventuellement d'analyser empiriquement les modalités d'appartenance et d'identification à la collectivité, c'est-à-dire les variations dans la nature et l'intensité de la relation que les individus établissent au sein des collectivités dont ils sont géographiquement membres. Cet essai propose un cadre basé sur trois axes ou dimensions, chacun constituant un spectre allant du plus ou moins positif au plus ou moins négatif : l'axe pragmatique ou utilitaire qui définit la collectivité comme espace d'action économique, politique ou sociale ; celui de l'interdépendance sociale qui fait que le sort économique et politique de même que le statut social des individus dépendent du sort et du statut de la collectivité ; et celui de l'héritage culturel commun qui fait que les individus se reconnaissent les uns les autres comme ayant certaines caractéristiques distinctives. Certains types de relations individu-collectivité sont identifiées pour chacune de ces trois dimensions.
