Abstract
This collection of papers is drawn from the World Archaeological Congress held in Cape Town in 1999 and the Society for Historical Archaeology held in Quebec City in 2000. The contributors tackle some of the more awkward and non-politically correct issues concerned with 'Britishness' and the British Empire head-on. Addressing questions of race, status, ethnicity, gender, domination and resistance, consumption and trade, they present a critical evaluation of 'Britishness' from a variety of perspectives. With case studies stretching from Ireland, Scotland and Wales, to Canada, Australia, South Africa, Cyprus and Sri Lanka, contributors explore the physical and conceptual entities that have defined, symbolised and manipulated 'Britishness'.
