Entre 1920 y la década de 1950 se escribían, representaban y publicaban obras de teatro en quechua en la ciudad de Ayacucho, Perú. Estas obras conforman un corpus importante pero poco conocido de dramas y comedias cuyos protagonistas son campesinos de la zona rural circundante. Este artículo ofrece una primera descripción de este corpus, examinando su temática y su lenguaje. Se demuestra que el teatro quechua ayacuchano estaba dirigido a la población bilingüe urbana, en especial a los escolares, a quienes los dramaturgos ayacuchanos buscaban educar sobre la “situación del indio”.
