Abstract
Depuis les années 1990, on propose de plus en plus de nouveaux modèles pour expliquer le phénomène du nationalisme. Entre autres, le nationalisme culturel est censé témoigner de la relation entre un pouvoir culturel dans la société et la formation de l’identité nationale. La recherche tente d’améliorer la compréhension de ce phénomène en cherchant ses manifestations concrètes dans le cas particulier du hockey au Québec à partir du contexte propre à l’histoire du Québec et du Canada. En 1993, le Canadien de Montréal remportait sa dernière coupe Stanley à ce jour. Or, jamais l’équipe n’avait été composée d’autant de joueurs francophones. S’agit-il d’une coïncidence ? Les résultats montrent qu’il existe une relation significative entre le fait de remporter la coupe Stanley et la proportion de francophones au sein du Canadien. De plus, un seuil critique d’environ 50 % de joueurs francophones semble nécessaire pour voir cette relation apparaître. Le succès s’établit alors au taux singulier d’un championnat à toutes les deux ou trois tentatives. La recherche tente d’associer ces résultats à une manifestation concrète du nationalisme culturel canadien-français/québécois.
