Abstract
La taverne montréalaise a historiquement constitué un espace social et culturel d’animation et de protestation ouvrière à certains aspects des conditions liées à l’industrialisation. Cette culture de résistance a diminué avec l’accélération du développement industriel et l’intégration graduelle du mouvement ouvrier dans les structures et les pratiques du capitalisme contemporain. En explorant les pratiques et la culture populaire de la taverne montréalaise dans ses transformations et dans ses articulations conjoncturelles constantes, nous voulons en saisir le potentiel à la fois paradoxal et subversif. Pour ce faire, nous analyserons la culture de la taverne selon les dimensions suivantes : comme agora politique et lieu d’émergence de pratiques de résistance; comme espace homosocial; et comme espace résiduel dans le contexte post-fordiste de la ville. De façon générale, cet article est porté par l’argument que la culture de la taverne, en tant qu’articulation du développement et de la transformation du Montréal industriel, met l’accent sur le caractère ambigu des lieux populaires, qui sont propices à la fois à des logiques dominantes et à diverses logiques de résistance.
