La problématique du développement durable interpelle directement le fonctionnement du capitalisme depuis une bonne dizaine d’années, en appelant à des changements dont l’ampleur varie en fonction des acceptions de la durabilité retenues. L’article tente de préciser les apports possibles de l’institutionnalisme de J.R. Commons à l’analyse d’une « action collective environnementale » représentative d’une volonté de structurer les conflits au sein d’un capitalisme durable. Après avoir rappelé les principales questions qui se posent au sujet de la compatibilité du capitalisme à la problématique du développement durable, nous analysons la pertinence des concepts avancés par J.R. Commons pour l’émergence d’un capitalisme durable. Pour cela, nous soulignons plus particulièrement la fécondité des principes du capitalisme raisonnable tels que définis par cet auteur, et leur proximité potentielle avec le développement durable. En se démarquant sensiblement de la posture de l’économie politique classique, l’institutionnalisme de Commons introduit en effet une opportunité intéressante pour la compréhension des enjeux de la durabilité. Puis nous nous interrogeons sur les difficultés d’une transposition de ces principes aux enjeux actuels de la définition d’un capitalisme durable, en insistant sur les limites d’une application des concepts de « valeur raisonnable » et de « transactions » aux démarches d’intégration des contraintes environnementales dans les comportements économiques du capitalisme contemporain.
