Abstract
La notion de geste est polysémique comme en témoigne la bibliographie considérable qui lui est consacrée. Le présent article limite son domaine aux gestes qui marquent l’activité dans les situations de travail. Il le fait en essayant de dégager quelques thèmes qui ont retenu plus particulièrement l’attention des ergonomes et des psychologues du travail avec l’objectif de montrer la place à réserver aux gestes dans l’analyse des activités auxquelles ils sont liés. Deux fonctionnalités des gestes, expressive et instrumentale, ont été privilégiées. Les différentes formes qu’elles peuvent prendre et le rôle qu’elles jouent dans le développement et la gestion de l’activité sont montrés. D’autres fonctionnalités sont aussi abordées propres à suggérer d’ultérieures recherches. La conclusion insiste sur l’intérêt de relier l’étude du geste à celle de l’activité dans laquelle il s’insère, chacune pouvant éclairer l’autre quand elles sont bien articulées.
