Abstract
Cet article affirme que les relations de pouvoir entre le capital et les travailleurs constituent des déterminants importants de la productivité et des conditions de santé et de sécurité au travail. L'argumentation est mise à l'essai d'abord au moyen d'une comparaison de la productivité et des conditions de sécurité dans deux usines d'automobiles qui ont connu des rapports de force très différents entre les travailleurs et le capital au milieu des années 70, et ensuite par une réexamination de ces conditions au milieu des années 80, après que les contextes politiques et économiques nationaux en Grande-Bretagne et en France eurent l'effet de changer de façon significative la situation dans deux usines. Les résultats empiriques appuient, en général, l'argumentation et invitent à d'autres recherches dans cette voie.
