Dans cet article, l’auteur s’intéresse à la question des rapports complexes entre langue et identité au sein d’une collectivité - le Québec - où le contexte général des transactions linguistiques, d’une part, et celui des modalités de définition identitaire du groupement des Québécois, d’autre part, ajoute à la complication du problème. Plutôt que de considérer la langue sous son seul aspect véhiculaire, l’auteur la situe au creux de ses enchevêtrements avec la mémoire à porter et la culture à ouvrir. C’est dans le cadre d’une problématique générale du passage de la collectivité québécoise vers d’autres lieux identitaires, et d’une actualisation des références historiques de cette collectivité, que le sujet est abordé.
