Abstract
À partir d’un extrait du livre X des Lois, nous avons remarqué que chez Platon, l’image récurrente de la traversée du fleuve était systématiquement en rapport avec la question de l’immortalité de l’âme. Ainsi, que ce soit à l’intérieur des mythes que le philosophe élabora, ou à l’intérieur de ses développements dialectiques, la traversée du fleuve a tout d’un symbole ésotérique, autrement dit, d’un symbole en rapport avec la transmission de la connaissance métaphysique inhérente au processus initiatique traditionnel. Nous proposons de montrer dans cet article que l’analyse des différents extraits de l’œuvre de Platon relatifs à la traversée du fleuve (dans la République, le Phédon, le Phèdre et le Timée) permet d’étayer cette hypothèse.
