À partir de 1943, l’armée française réorganisée sur le modèle américain doit prouver aux alliés qu’elle constitue toujours une puissance militaire. Les combats victorieux de la 3e DIA sur le Colle Belvédère permettent d’en faire la démonstration en même temps qu’ils donnent du crédit au général de Gaulle dans ses discussions avec les Anglo-saxons. Victoire militaire, victoire politique, le succès du Belvédère puis, plus tard, ceux remportés en Italie, doivent également contribuer à resserrer les liens entre la France et les populations d’Afrique du Nord. Dans ce dernier domaine, l’égalité et l’unité promises aux tirailleurs cèdent la place, à après la guerre à la frustration et aux désillusions.
