Abstract
Tout habitant du Phanar n’est pas Phanariote. La formation du noyau initial de cette caste est encore en partie méconnue. Vers 1700 on compte 19 familles patriciennes. Le drogmanat et le principat consacrent l’avènement sociopolitique des Phanariotes. La greffe de certaines familles phanariotes sur des maisons nobiliaires moldaves et valaques scelle la synergie, voire la symbiose des deux groupes jusqu’à la Révolution grecque. Après 1821 les Phanariotes relèveront d’autres défis et diversifieront leurs activités. La perception des Phanariotes chez les Grecs et les Roumains se cristallise après la parution de la diatribe de Marc-Philippe Zallony (1824), et la traduction de ce libelle en grec et en roumain. L’auteur de la présente communication se propose d’esquisser la fortune et le discrédit qui ont marqué le groupe social des Phanariotes.
