Abstract
El sindrome de ovario poliquistico (SOP) se reconoce en la actualidad como un trastorno heterogeneo que provoca una sobreproduccion de androgenos, principalmente del ovario, dando lugar a anovulacion e hirsutismo y que se asocia con resistencia a la insulina. Las secuelas a largo plazo del SOP incluyen un mayor riesgo de diabetes, obesidad, sindrome metabolico, hiperplasia endometrial e infertilidad anovulatoria. Los sintomas en la adolescente incluyen oligomenorrea, hirsutismo, acne y aumento de peso. La resistencia a la insulina, la peor tolerancia a la glucosa y la diabetes tambien se han demostrado en las adolescentes con SOP. El tratamiento debe instaurarse precozmente para reducir los sintomas y las secuelas a largo plazo del SOP. La perdida de peso, la anticoncepcion oral y los antiandrogenos son eficaces para tratar los sintomas de este trastorno. Las medicaciones sensibilizantes a la insulina han demostrado ser eficaces, pero deben usarse con precaucion hasta que ensayos aleatorizados mayores hayan demostrado los beneficios a corto y largo plazo sobre los tratamientos tradicionales en la poblacion adolescente.
