Franck Favier est spcialiste de la Sude contemporaine du premier Empire franais auquel le royaume scandinave dut un inflchissement marqu du cours de son histoire. En 1997, il a soutenu l'EPHE une thse, La Sude entre les grandes puissances, 1800-1815, analyse diplomatique . partir de ses travaux qu'il rend ainsi accessibles un large public, il offre dans le prsent ouvrage une synthse centre autour du personnage de Bernadotte qui se rvle une biographie trs classique, abondamment documente, et fonde sur des sources indites. L'auteur vite les cueils de l'anecdote aussi bien que ceux de la lgende noire laquelle pouvaient entraner un tel destin, le caractre de son hros , ses rapports tourments avec Napolon Bonaparte et leurs lourdes consquences pour la France impriale. Il s'agit d'un portrait de Bernadotte en son temps qui permet Franck Favier de prvenir les jugements de valeur.
