Novas tendências e novas competências das bibliotecas universitárias, constituem o enfoque desta comunicação e são o resultado das mudanças introduzidas por Bolonha que transformou o ensino aprendizagem num processo mais colaborativo e aberto, a par da intensa utilização das tecnologias no quotidiano dos utilizadores e na sua formação académica. Este estudo teve por base um trabalho de doutoramento em ciências da informação e adotou a metodologia da triangulação de dados (metodologia quantitativa, observação e revisão da literatura), permitindo redefinir um novo modelo para as bibliotecas universitárias que assumem hoje um papel inovador e interventivo no apoio às atividades de investigação, na literacia da informação, na proximidade com os utilizadores e de cumplicidade com a comunidade externa à universidade. O recurso às ontologias, à web semântica, à computação em nuvem e à curadoria digital na preservação e recuperação da informação e dos dados científicos, são tendências que estão a consolidar-se nas práticas das bibliotecas universitárias e exigem o reforço das competências dos bibliotecários em domínios diversificados e abrangentes sobretudo na área tecnológica e digital de modo a conseguirem comunicar o seu valor e afirmar-se na comunidade académica como serviços imprescindíveis a um ensino universitário de qualidade.
