Abstract
Il a été longtemps admis en sociologie que l'on pouvait envisager le destin psychiatrique d'un individu en termes de "carrières" qui menaient à l'institution psychiatrique. La recherche décrite ici reprend cette notion de carrières, mais l'applique à une situation où les carrières possibles se sont multipliées. Cela suppose évidemment de concevoir la maladie et ses comportements associés en termes de stratégies individuelles, c'est-à-dire comme le degré de rencontre entre la capacité d'action d'un individu et les opportunités qu'il saisit. La méthode choisie fut celle des récits de vie recueillis à l'aide d'interviews approfondies et répétées. Les récits de trente-cinq patients furent analysés en fonction des notions de "saturation" de H. Becker et de "negative case" de Lindesmith. Cette analyse utilisa aussi l'intuition clinique du chercheur. L'analyse a permis de dégager divers éléments - définis tantôt en termes psychiatriques, tantôt en termes sociaux - qui servent ensuite à formuler une typologie des carrières psychiatriques et des stratégies qui les sous-tendent.
