Depuis plusieurs décennies, le principe de l’ extra muros fait éclore toutes sortes de manifestations multidisciplinaires oeuvrant dans la rue, au coeur de la ville. L’exemple des festivités du 400 e anniversaire de la fondation de la capitale nationale est éloquent à plus d’un titre. L’année 2008 à Québec fut ainsi rythmée par la présentation de spectacles commémoratifs, aériens, pyrotechniques et musicaux, de projections visuelles et sonores, de défilés, d’événements sportifs, de parcours urbains mettant en scène tableaux vivants et stations animées, d’expositions ou autres créations éphémères. Moyen résolument moderne qui inscrit l’événement global dans la veine de l’ extra-ordinaire tout en lui permettant d’être accessible par le plus grand nombre de publics, l’ extra muros crée une sphère intermédiatique et matérialise le sentiment du vivre ensemble dans l’espace public.
