Cet essai met à profit les travaux de Pierre Bourdieu pour évaluer le rôle grandissant pris par l’économie, à l’échelle internationale, dans les festivals de films et dans le cinéma d’art. Bourdieu a beaucoup écrit sur l’art et sa fonction dans la société. Il est célèbre pour ses arguments fameux sur la relation entre le jugement esthétique et les classes sociales dans La distinction. Cet essai met toutefois l’accent sur ses travaux tardifs, dans le domaine de la production culturelle, qui offrent un cadre conceptuel tout indiqué pour examiner les points d’intersections changeants entre l’art et le commerce en ce qui concerne les festivals de films contemporains.
