Em 2005, a energia hidraulica contribuiu com 25,8 EJ (Exajoules) do total de 490 EJ de energia consumidos no planeta (5,3%) (IPCC, 2007a). Em relacao a producao de eletricidade, a fonte hidraulica teve maior participacao, 16,48% dos 17.430 GWh consumidos mundialmente em 2005 (Taylor, 2008). O Brasil possui cerca de 19,4% da disponibilidade hidrica superficial do planeta, sendo o terceiro pais do mundo em capacidade instalada de geracao hidreletrica, atras da China e do Canada. Segundo o Balanco Energetico Nacional de 2007 (Brasil – MME/EPE, 2007) cerca de 84% do total da energia eletrica gerada foi obtida de forma renovavel por meio de usinas hidreletricas no Brasil. Em dezembro de 2006, dos 104.822 MW de capacidade instalada de geracao eletrica (sistemas interligado e interligacoes internacionais  7 ), aproximadamente 76% eram devidos a fonte hidraulica – 74.000 MW divididos em 638 usinas nacionais e 5.650 MW da parcela paraguaia da Usina Hidreletrica de Itaipu (Aneel, 2007). Uma possivel alteracao no regime de chuvas e, portanto, no regime hidrologico futuro, fruto do aquecimento climatico global, pode afetar consideravelmente o sistema eletrico brasileiro, que apresenta forte dependencia dos recursos hidricos. Entre os principais impactos projetados, pode-se destacar um provavel aumento da frequencia de eventos de precipitacao extrema, elevando o risco de inundacoes e de efeitos adversos na qualidade da agua superficial e subterrânea; assim como, um provavel aumento da extensao de areas afetadas por secas gerando escassez generalizada de agua. Procedimentos de adaptacao e praticas de gerenciamento de risco para o setor hidrico estao sendo desenvolvidos em alguns paises e regioes que reconheceram as mudancas hidrologicas projetadas. O presente trabalho visa discutir as possiveis consequencias da vulnerabilidade climatica do sistema eletrico brasileiro, com destaque para os efeitos no Sistema Interligado e nos Sistemas Isolados e as possiveis medidas de adaptacao de curto, medio e longo prazos. Neste trabalho discutimos tambem as incertezas futuras da interacao clima e agua, a vulnerabilidade dos recursos hidricos e do potencial hidraulico brasileiro aos eventos climatologicos extremos e sugerimos medidas estruturais e nao estruturais de adaptacao do setor hidreletrico as mudancas climaticas globais.
