Il couvre en effet un large eventail d'informations concernant le champ des communications, les diverses tendances, les theories et leur experimentation. C'est un condense d'histoire, un compendium, qui expose l'essentiel des courants de communication ayant traverse le siecle finissant et les questions cruciales emergentes qui dominent les tribunes universitaires et preoccupent les chercheurs de nos jours. Il retrace la genealogie des concepts et l'evolution des pratiques ainsi que les contextes de leur creation et utilisation.
