Abstract
Las tasas de embarazo en EE. UU. parecen haberse estabilizado en la ultima decada, pero siguen siendo mayores que las de otros paises industrializados. Aunque la abstinencia y los metodos de barrera estan disponibles y son efectivos en la evitacion del embarazo, un abordaje global es la mejor eleccion al aconsejar a los pacientes sobre las distintas opciones. El nuevo abordaje a los antiguos metodos anticonceptivos proporciona nuevas alternativas para los adolescentes que buscan metodos seguros y fiables. La disponibilidad y seguridad demostrada de los metodos anticonceptivos reversibles de larga duracion, como el dispositivo intrauterino y el implante subdermico, pueden permitir a las adolescentes tomar mejores decisiones para evitar el embarazo. Los futuros esfuerzos en la investigacion deben concentrarse en encontrar los motivos por los que las adolescentes tienen un mayor riesgo de embarazo no planeado y las soluciones a este problema. La futura tecnologia anticonceptiva sigue centrandose en la seguridad y en la conveniencia para facilitar el uso de anticonceptivos en las adolescentes.
