O artigo apresenta uma revisão da literatura sobre a avaliação de professores, destacando os diferentes objetivos, critérios e instrumentos que podem ser utilizados na construção de novas propostas. As alternativas disponíveis refletem concepções muitas vezes divergentes, o que pode repercutir em enfrentamentos durante o processo de tomada de decisões. Ainda assim, é grande o consenso em relação à necessidade desse processo ser o mais participativo possível, sendo ressaltada a importância do envolvimento dos professores. Outro consenso encontrado na bibliografia refere-se à superioridade das iniciativas que empregam mais de um instrumento avaliativo, possibilitando uma análise mais completa do trabalho docente.
