Abstract
La caatinga est un biome caractéristique d’une partie du Nord-est brésilien (le sertão), où prédomine un climat tropical semi-aride et qui présente des paysages variés liés surtout à une inégale répartition de faibles précipitations. En dépit de sa grande biodiversité et de son caractère singulier, la caatinga a été stigmatisée dans l’imaginaire géographique national comme un milieu inhospitalier et de type désertique, probablement en raison de son paysage végétal peu luxuriant, notamment comparé à l’Amazonie. Sa reconnaissance comme aire naturelle susceptible de valorisation culturelle et de protection a donc été retardée, la laissant en dehors des biomes dignes d’être classés comme Patrimoines nationaux dans la Constitution de 1988. Les mouvements sociaux, surtout au travers des débats sur les changements climatiques, la désertification et la durabilité, ont conduit au tournant du siècle à une mutation des représentations. La promotion de la durabilité et de la conservation de la caatinga demeure toutefois difficile en raison de l’enracinement des processus d’appropriation et de production de sens par les différents acteurs impliqués dans la (re)valorisation d’un patrimoine naturel très étendu (plus de 900 000 km2) et encore marqué négativement par son imaginaire. L’article identifiera ainsi les nouvelles valeurs et représentations paysagères qui permettent à la caatinga de devenir un objet géographique (naturel et culturel) digne d’être transmis aux générations futures, en insistant sur les critères de patrimonialisation depuis son inscription comme réserve de la biosphère.
