Abstract
Metz et Nancy furent les premières cités reliées par le chemin de fer en Lorraine (1850) et elles représentèrent, au fil du développement économique de la province, ses deux premiers centres ferroviaires. Metz connut des extensions, sans limites de superficie, sous les directives allemandes et suite à l’annexion entre 1871 et 1918. Les installations de Nancy furent en revanche, dès l’origine, étranglées par le tissu urbain environnant.L’article retrace l’histoire illustrée des infrastructures ferroviaires de cette dernière ville, à travers la guerre de 1870-1871 et les deux guerres mondiales notamment. Face aux problèmes de surface qui restèrent récurrents tout au long de la période et s’aggravèrent dans l’entre-deux-guerres sous la pression d’un trafic croissant, on reporta très tôt le trafic des marchandises sur Blainville, appelé à une expansion continue jusque dans les années 1950. Mais il a fallu 100 ans pour trouver une solution de « désincarcération » du dépôt et de l’entretien de Nancy-Ville, enfin déménagés et étendu à Heillecourt après la Libération.
