Abstract
À partir d'un bref examen des événements et des luttes qui ont entouré la transition au capitalisme au Japon à partir du milieu du XIXe siècle, l'auteur présente une interprétation non déterministe de cette transition. Il conteste certaines explications antérieures qui font du passage au capitalisme au Japon la suite quasi automatique des tendances présentes dans la période Edo (1600-1868) et il insiste sur la construction graduelle de ce passage, suivant les événements et les luttes. Il fonde cette interprétation sur les écrits d'auteurs (Bourdieu, Castoriadis, etc.) qui ont insisté sur la complexité de la causalité dans le social, sur le caractère partiel et transitoire des organisations sociales et sur la construction graduelle des évolutions historiques.
