Cet article se propose d’analyser le rôle déterminant de la voix off à partir de trois films brésiliens contemporains qui recherchent l’équilibre entre les préoccupations des auteurs et les demandes du cinéma grand public : La Cité de Dieu ( Cidade de Deus ), de Fernando Meirelles et Kátia Lund, L’homme qui copiait ( O homem que copiava ), de Jorge Furtado, et Le Rédempteur ( Redentor ), de Cláudio Torres. La parole en tant que discours du sujet « en situation » y apparaît dans son rapport au contexte social, marqué par des tensions liées à la violence, au développement des marchés illicites, au jeu de l’ascension sociale, à la délinquance patronale, à l’hégémonie de la consommation et à la crise de l’institution familiale.
