Antes de que el jesuita Francisco de Florencia pudiera publicar la Historia de la Provincia (1694) tuvo que quitar varios capítulos del segundo libro del primer volumen. La parte que fue sacada de su borrador da un resumen de los errores de las teorías antiguas del ambiente del Nuevo Mundo, la grandeza de la ciudad de México antes de la conquista española y la abundancia natural de la Nueva España. Este documento es muy valioso, pues demuestra cómo los historiadores coloniales fueron restringidos por la censura estatal en lo que quisieron publicar sobre América. La transcripción de esta parte censurada está precedida por una introducción que contiene un resumen breve de los viajes que realizó Florencia en el Viejo Mundo, el contexto general en que escribió la Historia de la Provincia y dos razones posibles por las cuales su crónica fue censurada.
