The authors describe the design and construction of a physical model of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) incorporating a linear induction motor (LIM) as the drive for a materials handling system. The control of the linear induction motor system is provided by an adjustable frequency drive which is connected to a microcomputer through a binary coded decimal interface. The model is used to evaluate the performance of this application and to demonstrate the advantages of this system over the existing materials handling systems. Methods of air gap control, speed control, and power supply are analyzed to determine suitable provisions in the design of FMSs incorporating LIMs.>
