Abstract
Cette étude entend préciser les circonstances et les modalités de la réception de Whitman. Le poète des Feuilles d’herbe est un de ceux pour qui le monde américain incarne un « nouveau monde ». Whitman est ainsi devenu un fétiche et un objet culte. Les questions de la grandeur de Whitman et de l’univers américain de sa poésie sont des questions complexes, parce que le poète découvre la contradiction entre la réalité et le rêve américain. À la lumière de ces faits et d’une glorification exagérée, la situation doxologique de Whitman est paradoxale. Parce que l’Amérique en tant que « plus grande démocratie du monde » perd sa force d’attraction, il convient de repenser l’américanité de Whitman afin de déconstruire le caractère incomparable du poète.
