Abstract
Se reconstruye en este trabajo el proceso de poblamiento de los pueblos riberenos del Municipio La Canada de Urdaneta del Estado Zulia, acudiendo a la parroquia eclesiastica Inmaculada Concepcion de La Canada como unidad de analisis. Se encuentra que la razon de ser de estos poblamientos estuvo asociada al establecimiento gradual de colonos criollos en territorios que presentaban condiciones climaticas que favorecian el establecimiento de hatos destinados a actividades pecuarias. La Parroquia eclesiastica Inmaculada Concepcion de La Canada, erigida el 27 de septiembre de 1784, fue la primera institucion que infundio cohesion a sus pobladores, estableciendo entre ellos deberes morales y materiales que contribuyeron a generar una conciencia colectiva. Se espera que la metodologia utilizada pueda ser de utilidad a investigadores interesados en reconstruir los procesos historicos de otras poblaciones venezolanas e hispanoamericanas.
