François Hédelin, dit l’abbé d’Aubignac, fondateur de l’Académie des Belles Lettres destinée à rivaliser avec la célèbre Académie française, fut souvent raillé par la critique de son temps. On l’accusa d’avoir imité la Carte de Tendre dans son Histoire du temps, ou Relation du royaume de Coqueterie (1654) et son obscur roman allégorique Macarise, ou la reine des isles fortunées (1664) qui, malgré ses audaces, reçut un accueil assez tiède. Dans un texte polémique publié en 1659 puis réédité en 1660, la Lettre d’Ariste à Cleonte, contenant l’apologie de l’Histoire du Temps, ou la defense du royaume de Coqueterie, d’Aubignac, sous le nom d’Ariste, affirme non seulement la priorité de sa carte sur l’esquisse de Madeleine de Scudéry, mais élabore une véritable poétique de l’allégorie sise sur un riche héritage qu’il revendique pour réhabiliter sa création. Semblablement, pour favoriser la réception de Macarise, il dote cette histoire en « forme de roman » d’un important péritexte destiné non seulement à permettre son déchiffrement, mais aussi à jeter les bases d’une nouvelle conception du roman. À une époque où la fiction narrative cherche encore sa voie, l’exégèse aubignacienne témoigne de préoccupations formelles et d’un effort de théorisation qui dépasse de loin la portée du Royaume de Coqueterie et de Macarise.
