Abstract
En comparaison avec la recherche effectuée en Angleterre et sur le continent européen, la recherche sur l'impact en Écosse des épidémies sur l'économie, la société et la culture du XVIe siècle et du début du XVIIe siècle, n'a pas avancé significativement depuis les années 60. En effet, les discussions récentes réutilisent souvent la recherche des années 30 et 50. L'absence de recherche d'importance récente au sujet de la peste, ainsi que la dépendance envers les sources publiées, ont contribué à créer une approche traditionnelle et biaisée qui présente l'épidémie au premier chef comme un phénomène urbain dont les conséquences à long terme sur le pays étaient limitées. Cette étude propose donc une réévaluation des données et remet en question ce modèle traditionnel, en mettant de l'avant que ces épidémies étaient un des principaux facteurs ayant provoqué la dislocation socio-économique et le changement dans l'Écosse d'avant 1650.
