Abstract
Des expériences ont été entreprises afin de mesurer les variations de longueur que présentent, au cours d'alternances d'humidification et de séchage, différentes pierres naturelles, en particulier des calcaires. Tous les échantillons étudiés subissent des variations de longueur allant de 1 à 18 nmlcm. Certains échantillons présentent un allongement permanent qui s'accroît avec le nombre de cycles. Ce phénomène correspond probablement à la désagrégation mécanique des roches par humidification/séchage. La comparaison des résultats obtenus avec les caractéristiques connues des roches permet de considérer que c'est probablement l'eau adsorbée dans les pores les plus fins et dans les argiles qui est responsable des dilatations observées.
