À leur arrivée, les Français furent confrontés à un premier choc, celui de l’hiver. Apprivoiser l’hiver n’était encore rien à côté de l’appréhension des cultures et, par delà, d’une civilisation d’Amérique totalement étrangère. Mais qui étaient ces habitants d’une « forêt infinie » ? Presque des animaux ? La fréquentation réciproque, avec des missionnaires principalement, a rapidement conduit à la déconstruction de ce stéréotype. Bientôt l’on compare leur âme à une bonne terre laissée en friche dont les premiers habitants échapperaient à l’ambition et à l’avarice. Le « barbare » cède la place au « bon Sauvage », il s’agit de gens simples vivant encore dans l’enfance de l’humanité. Gens simples ? L’écart entre les cultures était tellement fondamental qu’on ne pouvait que difficilement se le représenter même et principalement sur des questions aussi apparemment triviales que : qu’est-ce qu’un corps, la nudité, une âme, un esprit, l’humanité ? Le travail d’historien repose sur les sources, mais l’interprétation ne doit pas s’y emprisonner. Il importe de les analyser avec les travaux des anthropologues, tout particulièrement ceux de Claude Lévi-Strauss. Les descendants de Champlain ont-ils enfin assumé l’héritage de l’Amérique ?
