Abstract
Drawing upon cultural memory, trauma studies and psychoanalytic theories of transgenerational haunting, I read Ann-Marie MacDonald’s novel as offering a critique of the deadly consequences of conventional modes of national forgetting and remembering. The novel brings into view the effects of ignored and repressed national and personal trauma, which, by way of haunting across generations and geographies, constitute a distinct, if unconscious, mode of remembrance.
