Abstract
Cet article a comme objectif de présenter, à partir d’une approche historique sur la propriété terrienne, l’évolution conjointe des modes de mobilité choisis par les populations de l’altiplano occidental du Guatemala ou imposés à celles-ci. Les données générales sur l’histoire du foncier et des mobilités propres à la région de l’Occident sont articulées à des données locales recueillies par une recherche ethnographique dans la municipalité de San Martín Sacatepéquez. La notion de territoire désigne un système d’appropriation de l’espace qui présente des aspects tant économiques que symboliques de l’histoire et de la culture. Dans sa dimension économique, la terre reste le moyen par excellence de la survie matérielle de la société guatémaltèque. Elle est aussi le fondement de l’identité paysanne autochtone. Significatif aussi de l’enracinement à la terre des ancêtres, historiquement, les populations amérindiennes ont été actrices de phénomènes migratoires saisonniers et non permanents. Les migrations transnationales actuelles témoignent de l’évolution historique des phénomènes de mobilité qui doit être analysée en regard des transformations foncières et des contraintes économiques. Dans sa dimension symbolique, la terre porte, entre autres, l’image de la spoliation.
