In the context of modelling the process of modelling itself, a kernel framework to facilitate construction of a distributed, virtual laboratory to model specified research models is presented. First, issues of design are examined, particularly with regard to requirements. We discuss implementation strategies with a report on results achieved using Java to obtain a partial realisation of our design in the context of a distributed network of high-performance computing nodes.
