Abstract
The Comité national de la gravure française (French Engraving National Committee) is created October 28, 1938 in the wake of the 1937 Universal Exposition in order to "promote contemporary creation in printmaking". Experts sitting on the Committee are the best in their field, printmakers, curators from the Bibliothèque nationale, and traders. The Chambre syndicale des marchands d'estampes (trade union of print sellers) is involved from the start, and soon, with the support of the ministry of Foreign Affairs through its cultural affairs department, they organise French prints exhibitions in major cities around the world. Les Nouvelles de l'estampe is created in this context in 1963… with a very tight budget. Since there were no real periodicals on printmaking, Les Nouvelles filled the gap in 1972, going from a news bulletin to a fully-fledged journal backed by the Bibliothèque nationale and the Chambre syndicale.
