La Société québécoise d’ethnologie (S qe ) a récemment réalisé, pour le compte de la Ville de Québec et du ministère de la Culture, des communications et de la condition féminine (M cccf ), une étude sur le phénomène de la traversée du fleuve Saint-Laurent en canot à glace. L’objectif de la recherche était de faire la démonstration de l’importance patrimoniale de cette pratique qui remonte aux origines de la colonie mais qui se renouvelle chaque année, principalement dans le cadre des festivités du Carnaval de Québec. Dans son article, Genest – chargé de projet et à ce titre responsable du dossier – expose la démarche suivie par le consultant, Richard Lavoie, un spécialiste de la question, depuis la recherche préliminaire jusqu’à la préparation d’un rapport synthèse, en passant par la consultation des sources archivistiques et historiques et les enquêtes de terrain. Il fait état des trois grandes parties du rapport et de l’analyse qui en découle sur la base d’une grille de critères établie par l’U nesco pour déterminer la valeur patrimoniale des candidatures présentées dans le cadre du programme de reconnaissance des « chefs-d’oeuvre du patrimoine oral et immatériel de l’humanité. »
