Abstract
Plus que les autres écrits de Malthus, le premier « Essai sur le principe de population » est un texte militant, dont l'argumentation s'appuie davantage sur des positions morales que sur des données scientifiques. On y détecte aisément les principales composantes du système de valeurs qui anime la pensée de l'auteur, qu'il s'agisse de déontologie scientifique, de foi religieuse, de liberté, d'égalité, de charité ou de justice. Le « vice » et la « contrainte morale », facteurs de comportement humain, jouent, dans la théorie démographique malthusienne, un rôle fondamental indissociable de leur signification morale. Soucieux avant tout de préserver la liberté de l'homme, mais partagé entre son penchant à l'idéalisme et son exigenc:e de réalisme,Malthus s'est forgé une morale pragmatique, une morale du moindre mal, qualifiée aujourd'hui de « pessimisme malthusien ».
