Abstract
La mission d’information du citoyen propre au journalisme est génératrice de droits et de devoirs, donc d’une responsabilité sociale spécifique qui a servi d’élément structurant à sa constitution en tant que profession. Cependant, cette responsabilité sociale souffre d’un défaut majeur : laissée à l’appréciation des journalistes, elle n’est ni prescrite ni construite et n’est donc opposable à personne. Censé garantir la liberté d’informer, cet état de fait empêche en contrepartie d’assurer la qualité et le caractère responsable de l’information. C’est pourquoi l’auteur, à partir de l’exemple de l’arbitre de football comme sujet d’information et d’une série d’entretiens, a cherché à donner substance à cette responsabilité, à vérifier ce à quoi elle correspond dans le processus de production et de communication d’information et à vérifier les moyens disponibles pour la faire respecter.
