Abstract
Dominance rank in primates refers to an individual's relative position in a competitive hierarchy within a social group. Dominant individuals have priority of access to resources such as food, safe locations, and mating partners. Primates live in complex social systems and alliances may confound linear hierarchies. Nonetheless, dominance hierarchies are believed to reduce repeated overt conflict among group members and lead to enhanced reproductive success for high‐ranking individuals.
