Abstract
This paper is about the educational provision for children and adolescents suffering illness. Thesocial construction of the concepts of being ill, to go to hospital and stay hospitalized, to be born, to live andto die are discussed. The terminology used to define this type of educational provision, its goals and therelated legislation are mentioned. The clientele focused and the dynamic of the activities proposed arepresented as well as the number of hospital and home based education on the Brazilian context. Thesimilarities and differences between the Brazilian and the Canadian realities concerning the schooling for thesick population lead to some considerations related to this specific field.
