Uncertainty in fundamental period estimates leads to inaccurate design seismic loads
Bibliographic record
Abstract
To help engineers calculate design seismic loads, the 2005 edition of the National Building Code of Canada provides empirical equations to estimate the fundamental lateral period of a building. Unfortunately, these equations are inaccurate, so the fundamental period of a building once it is erected could be considerably different than the period used in design. In this study, we use experimental period data and uncertainty propagation to show that the uncertainty associated with the fundamental period significantly influences the accuracy of design seismic loads. When the period from the appropriate empirical equation is used in design, base shear may be considerably overestimated; while it may be considerably underestimated when the maximum period allowed by the code is used. Further, we show that the resulting uncertainty in base shear varies with location, seismic force-resisting system, site conditions, and building height.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
