Abstract
1980년대 이후 미국 연극계에 확실한 새로운 목소리를 내며 등장한 August Wilson은 아프리카계 미국인으로서의 경험을 바탕으로 20세기의 각 10년을 각각의 작품배경으로 삼아 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다. 1987년 봄에 브로드웨이에서 막을 올린 Fences는 월슨의 네 번째 작품으로 1950년대를 배경으로 하면서 상업적으로나 극적기교면에서 가장 뚜렷한 업적을 남긴 작품이다. 제목에서 나타나듯 펜스는 작품의 주제와 분위기를 잘 보여주는 셋팅이다. 이 드라마의 중심은 어려운 과거를 겪은 아버지 Troy Maxson과 아들 Cory와의 잘등이다 인종차별의 장애물을 이유로 아들의 꿈을 파괴하는 Troy의 내면에는 쉽게 이해하기 어려운 복잡한 심리가 자리잡고 있다.
